Engineering colleges have been springing up like wild mushrooms in India in the last few years. Their number has gone up to an astoundingly high 3,470 in 2014-15. The state of Andhra Pradesh alone has more than 700 colleges.

Educational institutions have sought the AICTE’s permission to close down around 1,973 courses in technical subjects, citing a poor employment scenario and flagging student interest in 2015. The regulator has allowed the discontinuation of 757 such courses followed by 89 in pharmacy, 57 in computer application and 54 management, according to the regulator. In addition, some 83 colleges, including 46 management and 31 engineering colleges, have closed down so far this year 2015.

For the first time in several years, the number of engineering seats in the country has declined in 2015. Student intake at undergraduate engineering courses started picking up from 2006-07. From 659,717 engineering seats in 2006, it jumped to more than 1.67 million in 2015. Now the technical education regulator is looking to cut some 600,000 engineering seats over a period of time.

The AICTE was formed in 1945 to regulate technical schools. The body was given statutory power by AICTE act of the parliament in 1987. It currently controls engineering, pharmacy, architecture, management, MCA, applied arts and crafts, town planning and hotel management institutes across the country.

Kindly Note now – Private colleges in India will no longer require approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to run their Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Computer Application (MCA) courses. The Supreme Court ruled that MBA and MCA course are no longer in the council’s ambit.

Justice BS Chauhan and V Gopala ruled that MBA is not a technical course within the definition of the AICTE act. According to the ruling, “approval from the AICTE is not required for obtaining permission and running an MBA course by the appellant colleges”.
